Course Descriptions
This first course is designed to provide a basic overview of lean manufacturing. This introduction program will prepare attendees for a more comprehensive look at lean manufacturing that will be discussed in the five remaining courses. It will cover topics such as the seven wastes, identification of the key shop floor metrics and why they should be improved. This course sets the tone for your company’s lean manufacturing strategic purpose.
Kaizen and Kaizen Event Implementation
The philosophy of kaizen, which means continuous improvement, is the starting point and driver for all lean initiatives. Kaizen events are opportunities to make focused changes in the workplace, but they require solid up front planning and smart implementation strategies. An established company kaizen program will help create a foundation for change that will enable a company to sustain process improvements for the life of the company. Many improvement efforts fail to reap the financial and cultural rewards because of lack of planning, execution, and accountability within the organization. Knowing lean manufacturing is the easy part. Implementing is not as easy and this course will teach you how.
Process AnalysisThe collection and understanding of your shop floor’s current state is essential to improving productivity on the factory floor. Most companies do not have this information or the data that is available is inaccurate.
This workshop is designed to outline the proper technique in collecting time and work content data. It will provide the data collectors with the tools and applications to identify waste removal opportunities, rid it from your processes, and establish best practices through standard work implementation. Topics covered:
- Time and Motion Study Collection
- Effective Hours
- Takt Time and Cycle Time
- Waste Reduction
- Line Balancing
- Process Efficiency
- Standard Work
5S and the Visual Workplace
Organization and cleanliness is the cornerstone of any manufacturing environment. This highly detailed course will outline the fundamental aspects of 5S and visual management. The 5S system is a powerful continuous improvement philosophy that can generate immediate results. However, understanding its principles and how to implement them is critical to its success. The 5S and the Visual Workplace course will provide the information needed to start your 5S program; and make it stay! Topics covered:
- Red tag events
- Shadow boards
- Kanban and material replenishment
- Auditing and tracking
Mistake Proofing and Setup Reduction
Human error is a fact of life. Even if machines and equipment or set perfectly, mistakes can be made. This course will outline popular techniques in mistake proofing and how to reduce the time associated with setup. Quick changeover is essential in a lean manufacturing environment and can be a major contributor to increasing throughput and lead-time. This course also covers an in depth look at quality at the source and inspection.
Workstation and Line DesignFinally, your new process can be designed and constructed. The Workstation and Line Design course will bring the certificate program together and apply the knowledge into creating your first lean manufacturing process. Using kaizen and kaizen event philosophies, the key elements into workstation and line design will be illustrated including construction techniques for quick implementation. Assembly and non-assembly process based approaches will be explained.
Total Preventative MaintenanceThis course is designed to outline the important aspects of an effective total preventative maintenance program for both operators and maintenance personnel. It will teach how to create TPM for operators and maintenance, and also show how to design and implement visual TPM boards in each work area. Cross training will also be discussed.
